Botanical Painting in Watercolor (In-person)

Labor Day Weekend — in residency at the New England Craft Program!

Learn how to draw and paint your favorite perennials and other botanical subjects in watercolor. With step-by-step instruction, Corry demystifies watercolor and helps students feel confident in an experimental and meditative workshop. Students will work from direct observation of flowers, leaves and more. Topics will include painting a bouquet of flowers expressively with strong composition and value, detailed renderings of a single flower in the classical tradition of botanical painting, and a focus on leaves, funghi and other botanical elements. Bring cut flowers from your garden or use the flowers provided. No experience necessary; all levels welcome.

*August 30 is the arrival day for this session. Workshop instruction starts on August 31 and ends September 2.

Landscape Painting in Watercolor (In-person at ACA)

Demystify watercolor painting in this fun and supportive studio class! Learn about managing the paint-to-water ratio and enjoy this wonderful medium for creating expressive and evocative paintings. Students will quickly be comfortable with creating value studies in pencil to understand contrast and composition. Then paint a variety of landscapes in watercolor by practicing techniques such as flat wash, dry brush, mixing colors on both the palette and the paper, wet-into-wet, creating effective edges and others. Subjects may include seascapes, mountains, gardens and more. A variety of painting styles will be presented with inspirations from watercolor artists such as John Singer Sargent, Mignonette Yin Cheng, and others. Reference landscapes photos will be provided for each session. Students are also invited to bring photos of their favorite landscapes or travel photos as references. All levels are welcome.

Fundamentals of Japanese Ink Painting: The Four Gentlemen (In-person at ACA)

4 Mondays, 1:00 – 3:30 PM

Students will learn several basic techniques of painting with Sumi ink and brushes to create expressive and meditative paintings of nature. Subjects include the plum blossom tree, orchid, chrysanthemum, and bamboo, which are referred to as “The Four Gentlemen” in classical ink painting. Learn how to create sumi ink on a stone with an ink stick and water, use the brush in
creative ways, and explore the mysteries of ink-to-water ratios. See how ink creates interesting effects in values and shapes. Most of all, have fun and relax with this flowing form of art! Classical inspirations from the master paintings of the Japanese Edo Period will be explored.
Beginners are welcome.

Learn how to draw and paint botanical subjects from direct observation. Step-by-step instructions will foster meditative connections to nature while learning to create graceful and accurate drawings and paintings. Develop control of line, texture, shading and composition with graphite pencils. Create colorful watercolor paintings of botanical subjects including leaves, flowers, fruits and more. Both detailed and loose approaches to the subjects will be covered. Learn basic botany to improve accuracy and add beautiful details. Some drawing experience is preferred but beginners are welcome.

Nature Sketchbook: Art on the Trails (In-person Offsite)

Join me for a nature journaling workshop to learn how to draw the wonderful world of Arlington’s parks. Learn how to study and draw quick impressions of plants, rocks, small animals, birds, fungi and more! Students will use graphite pencils, pens and watercolors. Instruction in sketching, adding watercolors and composition will be covered. Students will have ample time to draw and paint with lots of individual feedback from the instructor. Plan to start your summer nature journal here! Beginners welcome.

Mindful Drawing

Mindful drawing is an approach to drawing that is contemplative, nurturing and restorative for many artists. Each session of this six week course includes a variety of observational and imaginative drawing exercises using graphite pencil, pen and charcoal. Beginners are welcome. Art Journaling with Collage and Mixed Media

Join artist Corry Buckwalter for a playful and fun exploration of color, composition and creativity using collage and mixed media. Use a variety of materials to create an art journal that develops and fosters your creative artistic practice. Corry will teach the fundamentals of organizing a visual story with collage and mixed media. Students may choose from a variety of projects including applying media to existing sketchbooks, creating collaged Japanese scrolls or folding screens, working from found book materials and more. Botanical Drawing and Watercolor Painting

Develop your skills in drawing and watercolor painting botanical subjects in this relaxing practice of connecting with nature. Learn blending, layering colors, combining graphite with colored pencils, underpainting with colored pencils and other techniques with step-by-step instructions. Create several finished drawings and paintings with lots of instructor feedback. Subjects include flowers, fruits, leaves, peppers, and more. Some observational drawing experience is preferred.
